Collecting & storytelling
For mapping and collecting we (Audrey, Duy, Rick V and I) choose to collect data that shows the type of cuisine you can find on the Knowledge Mile. We discussed on different data we could collect such as logos, object's in front of the shop, music, colour of the interieur, smells, business cards. We ended up with business cards, music and a photo of the front of the restaurant. Before we walked the data walk we already looked online for restaurants. We came up with a list of 40 restaurants so we narrowed it down to 14 with all different nationalities.
Our data-walk ended up being more than 4 hours. We collected business cards from all of them except 2 we asked what kind of music they played and took pictures of their entrance.
The next day we split up in pairs Audrey and Rick worked on smells. Duy and I worked on paper art and the restaurant entrance (facade). Only paper art was not enough so after talking to Loes we decided to walk the data walk again and record the sound of the restaurant (we decided to do 5 restaurants). To incorporate the sounds in our foldable map we wanted to use our previous learned interactive design with bare conductive.
The collaboration whent good except that Duy one time came 2,5 hours to later than we agreed upon. I talked to him about this and next time he was on time.
All the facades are made by us in illustrator using our own pictures and google street view as a reference. Making this took some time and not all the details are visible after laser cutting. Still we were amazed at the level of detail that was possible. We ended up with more that 20 houses, some failed or we folded then wrong or got torn apart.
All restaurant except one found it fine that we recorded sound in their restaurants. So we went to a different restaurant and made that facade.

In the end the conductive tape and sound didn't work like we wanted to. Even without touching it some sound would go of. We re did the 'wiring' multiple time to succes. I am still proud of the facades without the sounds.
